FILTHY
a group invitational multi-media exhibition produced by Plastic Fantastic opens on July 31st at Studio 34 in West Philly (4522 Baltimore Ave) and runs through August 14, 2009.
The show focuses on artists who use water and water bottles as a medium. Participating artists are Maggie Nowinski, Krisanne Baker, Steve Pauley and Diedra Krieger. Through the overwhelming use of materials – over 8,000 discarded plastic water bottles are used in two projects – Krieger and Nowinski's intentions are to raise questions about access to safe drinking water and express frustration with plastic water bottles. Furthering that investigation, Baker’s site specific water shade is made from water collected from the Schuylkill River in Bartram Gardens in Philadelphia, questioning content and humanity's cumulative effects on water quality. Pauley’s etching in granite of a crushed gallon sized water bottle makes a lasting statement about their fleeting usefulness. At the opening reception, musicians, Radere and Tony G, will create a live mix of water sounds to complete the immersive environment.
Of the 8,000 water bottles, 4,000 were collected from Penn's graduation in 2008 and 2009. The majority of the rest were collected from Blue Mountain Recycling Center.
A schedule of events is planned to accompany the show and includes a lecture by Stan Laskowski from the Philadelphia Global Water Initiative paired with a dance performance by SHARP Dance Company. Stan Laskowski is a professor at Penn in the Environmental Studies department.
